Information Literacy 

Mission: The librarians support the curriculum through instructional services that assist students with their research and provide them with information literacy skills for lifelong learning.  To that end, librarians collaborate with faculty to engage students with inquiry-based assignments that foster critical thinking and prepare students to use information wisely and effectively in their academic, professional, and personal lives.

 

NEASC Revised Standards:
The
New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) revised standards (4.6, 4.18, 7.4, and 7.7) specify that graduates successfully completing an undergraduate program should demonstrate competencies including the capability for continuing learning and the skills of information literacy.

Information Literacy defined:
Information literacy is a set of competencies enabling individuals to "recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, access, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information." 
Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL)

Competencies:
In keeping with ACRL, Library &  Information Services prepares students to achieve information literacy competence by teaching them to:

  1. Determine the extent of information needed OUTCOMES
  2. Access the needed information effectively and efficiently OUTCOMES
  3. Evaluate information and its sources critically and incorporate selected information into his or her knowledge base and value system OUTCOMES
  4. Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose OUTCOMES
  5. Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access and use information ethically and legally OUTCOMES
