Saint Michael's service learning trip to Tanzania, Africa receives strong media coverage for the participants' continuing efforts with assisting the Ilula Orphan Center.
In the spring of 2007, Political Science Associate Professor Patricia Siplon and Journalism and Mass Communication Assistant Professor Jerry Swope accompanied 10 students to Tanzania for three weeks to write a grant proposal and create a Web site to help with funding for The Ilula Orphan Program. In February 2008, Siplon, Swope and some of the students sponsored a series of events that highlighted their efforts and raised awareness. Below is some recent coverage of their work:

Ridgefield woman comes to aid of injured hiker during Ecuador trip

A story about a Saint Michael's Wilderness Program trip to Ecuador over Winter break appeared in the Danbury, Conn News Times. Senior Kate Forcheski, a wilderness adventures leader from Ridgefield, Conn., and other Saint Michael's students on the trip helped rescue a hiker who had fallen and broken her ankle. This Wilderness Program trip was led by Eben Widlund, assistant director of the Wilderness Program and Marty Molitoris, a member of the professional climbing staff. Widlund and Molitoris are both Wilderness EMT's, Wilderness Medical Educators and AMGA certified instructors. Their combined expertise in conjunction with the personal power supplied by the student climbing team expedited the injured hiker's care.

Students help with taxes

Saint Michael’s junior, accounting major, Andres Camilo '09, was featured in this Burlington Free Press story for helping a Burlington resident complete the resident's tax returns. Camillo and several students from local colleges were providing assistance with tax preparation as part of the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

Boston Globe story features student athelete standout

The impressive basketball career that Saint Michael's student Michelle Otey '10 has with the Purple Knights was highlighted in a Boston Globe news story. Head Coach Jen Niebling was quoted saying that Otey is an "an incredibly accurate jump shooter with great form, and there's a quiet drive inside her that leads her to continually improve."

Green Campuses

The student Environmental Council at Saint Michael's College was featured in a WCAX Evening News story about a program the members are working on to address global warming at the campus level. One initiative began in the fall when the college started composting its food waste. Student member Dan Sandberg '09 was quoted in the story saying that such initiatives would save the college money and be better for the environment.

Professor of English, Dr. Lorrie Smith was part of a conversation about “how individuals and families define and understand their identities within the society around them,” looking particularly at Vermont immigrant families. Smith specializes in American poetry and African-American literature, including literature of the Middle Passage, which included several courses taking students on service-learning trips to Ghana.

Sewing machine repair firm thrives

An article about an Essex Junction sewing business in the Burlington Free Press drew attention to several Saint Michael’s programs thanks to Peter Harrigan, professor of fine arts/theater, who was quoted as a sewing expert. Harrigan, who was picking up sewing machines for his students, said that students sew patches and straps on their uniforms they use for Saint Michael's Fire and Rescue as well as for the college's Wilderness Program.
