NSSE

Saint Michael's College was one of twelve institutions selected in 1998 to participate in the original development and testing of the National Survey of Student Engagement. Saint Michael's continues to participate in this national endeavor on an annual basis. The survey queries students about behaviors that have been shown to co-relate with successful engagement in the process of learning. The results give an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. These results can provide prospective students with insights into how they might learn and develop at a given institution.

The NSSE 2007 survey compared 610 colleges and universities using five benchmarks of excellence:

  • Level of Academic Challenge
  • Active and Collaborative Learning
  • Student-faculty interaction
  • Enriching Educational Experiences
  • Supportive Campus Environment

A total of 547 first-year students and seniors at Saint Michael's participated in the NSSE 2007 survey.

Based on the survey results, Saint Michael's had some if its highest scores in the following categories:

  • Developing relationships with faculty members
  • Acquiring a broad general education
  • Studying abroad
  • Completing foreign language coursework
  • Contributing to the welfare of their community
  • Developing a deepened sense of spirituality
  • Attending campus events and activities

Saint Michael's tracks all of the survey indicators to establish trends. We consider how these results may suggest ways to improve our academic and student programming to meet the challenges and opportunities presented by our students.
