Concert by the Gonville and Caius College Choir

9/3/2016

8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Performance

A free “English Choral Music Workshop” for local singers, presented by Dr. Geoffrey Webber, director of the Gonville and Caius College Choir from England, will be offered at 2:30 p.m. in the McCarthy Arts Center. At 8 p.m., the Gonville and Caius College Choir will present a free concert in the Chapel of Saint Michael the Archangel, singing a selection of sacred choral works and music from the court of Henry VIII. The ancient colleges of Oxford and Cambridge University preserve the English Choral Tradition at its height. Vermont audiences have very few opportunities to hear choirs in this tradition, which sound significantly different from American choirs, singing with a cleaner, lighter tone, almost no vibrato, and an extraordinary attention to tuning. In addition, the performance will showcase the College chapel’s cathedral acoustics, while the choir’s talented young organ scholars will make superb use of its 1966 Casavant organ. The concert, sponsored by the College’s Department of Fine Arts and funded by the Marc and Dana vanderHeyden Endowment, forms one of a series of musical events at Saint Michael’s College celebrating the 50th anniversary of the organ. Under Dr. Webber, this group has become one of England’s leading collegiate choirs, with a world-wide reputation based on extensive touring, an exciting program of concerts and broadcasts, and highly acclaimed recordings. During the school year the choir’s 24 singers and two organists, mostly undergraduates at the College studying a wide range of subjects, provide music for three Anglican chapel services per week and several College feasts.
