Vermont Choral Union Concert

4/29/2018

3:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Concert

The concert’s theme, Tapestry, “intends to capture the idea of weaving together music that is old and new, sacred and secular, slow and beautiful, energetic and surprising,” according to VCU Music Director, Jeff Rehbach. The ensemble of community-based singers will perform a mosaic of inspirational classical a cappella works spanning the centuries. From the delicate texture of Renaissance polyphonic motets of William Byrd, John Wilbye, and Claudio Monteverdi, to the ethereal, subdued, and entreating interpretations of Elgar, Debussy, and Barber, the group seeks new interpretations of timeless works by exploring spirited, contemplative, and interwoven settings of traditional texts arranged by contemporary composers, including Canticum Novumby Ivo Antognini, Locus Iste by Paul Mealor, and Ubi Caritas by Ola Gjeilo. These concerts mark the conclusion of Jeff Rehbach’s tenure as Music Director of the Choral Union, who will be retiring after having served as VCU Music Director for seven years. To mark the occasion, the Choral Union will present the premiere of How Can I Keep from Singing? - the poetry of Robert Wadsworth Lowry (1829-1899) arranged by VCU tenor, Maarten van Ryckevorsel.
