Two important aspects of the vision for Saint Michael's College are strength in community and the centrality of students. The main focus of the Sustainability Coordinator is to foster and nurture a campus culture of Sustainability. The college prides itself on its strong sense of community among staff, faculty and students. Any sustainability efforts need to focus on the community of Saint Michael's College. This means working closely with, interacting with and learning from everyone part of this great campus. Sustainability initiatives will be geared towards the wonderful people at the college. Explore the projects below to see how we are integrating sustainability behaviors into the campus culture.
Saint Michael's College takes The St. Francis Pledge
All across our country, Catholics are taking the St. Francis Pledge to care for Creation and the Poor and joining the Catholic Climate Covenant. The St. Francis Pledge is a promise and a commitment by Catholic individuals, families, parishes, organizations and institutions to live our faith by protecting God's Creation and advocating on behalf of people in poverty who face the harshest impacts of global climate change. Water Bottle Fill Stations on Campus
In the Spring of 2009, Green Up and the Office of Sustainability launched a week long educational week on the impacts of plastic water bottles (environmental, economic and social impacts). In order to make smart choices on how to drink water (from a reusable water bottle), the Office of Sustainability has installed several water bottle fill stations throughout campus at the following locations:
- Alliot first floor (a hydration station that counts usage!)
- Tarrant second floor
- Jean Marie first floor
- Library third (main) floor
- Founders first floor
- Cheray Science 1st floor by elevator (our 2nd Hydration Station!)
- Sloane Art Center (on North Campus)
MORE FILL STATIONS COMING SOON (Fall 2012)
- Klein Hall
- McCarthy Arts Center
- Library (bottom level)
- Saint Edmund's Hall 1st floor
- Saint Edmund's Hall 2nd floor
- Saint Edmund's Hall 3rd floor
The new Quad Commons building (when completed) will have every water fountain retrofitted with a water bottle filler!
Go Green Living Guide to Sustainable Living/Sustainability Program brochure
"Go Green: Your College Guide to Sustainable Living at Saint Michael's College," was created in the Spring of 2008 by Zach Mangione, Campus Coordinator of Vermont Campus Energy Group, and Dan Sandberg ('09). From 2008 - 2010, every first year student received these guides as part of their Green Welcome Package. To save paper/resources, this guide has evolved into the Sustainability Program Brochure. Every first year student receives the brochure as part of their orientation packet.
First Year Students' Go Green Welcome Kits
Since 2008, the Office of Sustainability has put together a snazzy Green Welcome package for every first year student. The package is placed in the dorm rooms by the amazing RA staff of the first year Residence Halls. This kit includes the following "tools" to help each first year student get start on the pathway to green living:
- Green up canvas tote bag
- Stainless Steel reusable water bottle
- Green Up reusable mug
- CCTA Bus Guide (all students ride the local bus transportation for FREE!)
All first year students can find their Go Green Welcome Kits in their Residence Hall rooms when they arrive for Orientation!
Campus Store Tote Bags & Incentive Program
The Saint Michael's campus store has purchased reusable tote bags that will be given away (free) to all students with their purchase of text books! Also, when a customer brings his/her own bag for purchases (or doesn't need a plastic bag), the campus store will donate money to a local charity (this incentive program is currently being worked on, more details to follow). Also, be on the lookout for a bin in the front of the store recycle and reuse plastic bags to reduce landfill waste!
The next time you're in the campus store, be sure to thank Steve and Denise for doing their part to keep Saint Michael's College sustainable!
Reusable Mug Discount
Bring your own mug to Cafe Cheray and the Knight Stand and receive a discount (as well as peace of mind for reducing waste in the local landfills and saving trees). Also, remember to bring a mug to coffee shops in the Burlington area.
