Saint Michael's is known for close interactions between its faculty and students. As a result, getting involved in a research project with a faculty member is surprisingly easy. There are four kinds of research activities available at Saint Michael's.
Research for Academic Credit
Many majors require students to complete the equivalent of a senior thesis (sometimes called a Senior Seminar) for which they receive academic credit. Students work closely with an academic advisor on these capstone projects.
Independent Research with Faculty
Independent research projects with faculty members--which are not-for-credit--often lead to peer-reviewed publications and presentations at major conferences. These projects are an exciting opportunity for students and faculty to work side-by-side, making important discoveries in their fields. For students, these opportunities not only provide excellent resume-building experience, but also the chance to work closely with a mentor. Some students may even qualify for grant-funded research stipends.
Summer Research through the Center for Social Science Research
Student research fellowships are available to students who want to pursue a research project on their own under the guidance of a faculty sponsor. These projects are funded, and include a stipend of up to $2,500 for students to work full time on a research project for at least two months in the summer (lesser amounts are available for students who choose to supplement their research stipends with part-time employment). For questions or more information, contact Professor Herb Kessel, 802.654.2460.
Summer Provost Research Grants
For students who wish to conduct summer research in their discipline of study, Saint Michael’s College offers the Provost Research Grant. The grant includes a $2500 stipend and housing on campus (at a small fee). At least one proposal will be funded from each area: Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences.
