Campus E-Mail Communication Regarding the H1N1 Influenza

April 27, 2009

During the past few days, we cannot turn on the television or pick up a paper and not notice that there are cases of the swine flu both globally and in our country. Swine Influenza is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza. People do not normally get swine flu, but human infections can and do happen. I would like to update you on the status of the swine flu in Vermont.

To date, there are no cases of the Swine Flu in Vermont. However, we are working closely with the Vermont Department of Health and evaluating anyone who has flu-like symptoms. We are able to send flu cultures on any suspected individuals.

While any case of flu is serious, there are things that you can do to stay healthy:

  • Practice good hand washing using soap and water.
  • Cover your mouth or nose when coughing or sneezing.
  • If you feel ill with flu-like symptoms, stay home or see your healthcare provider.
  • Avoid close contact with sick persons

Students with a sudden onset of fever over 100 degrees, sore throat, cough or body aches should come to Student Health Services to be evaluated. Staff and faculty should seek care at their local health care provider.
