The office of New Student Programs and Development serves as a resource and support for first year students at Saint Michael's College. The office assists students in their transition to the college setting by offering a variety of opportunities designed to support a student's pursuit of academics and enhance their personal growth and development.
The Director attempts to meet with each first year student individually or in a small group at least once during their first year. Discussions focus on the college experience, both academically and residentially, as well as goal setting for college and beyond.
The Director also oversees the Floor Visitors: A Dialogue program in which a faculty member, a staff member, and upper-class students (s) "adopt" a wing on a floor of first year students. Together, this team works with the Resident Assistant on the wing to discuss certain issues as they affect students in the classroom as well as in the community. The topics covered in this program are transitions/getting involved; alcohol and consequence thinking; personal safety and assault; global society and issues of multiculturalism; and relaxation/stress management.
In cooperation with the residence hall staff, the Director also oversees a series of workshops and activities that make up the Extended Orientation Program that begins immediately after Orientation Weekend ends and continues through the end of the first year. Informational and Community Bulletin Boards, Weekend Programs, and Educational Programs are all designed to educate, raise awareness, and to challenge individuals to evaluate their beliefs and values.
