Resources for Students with Special Physical Needs

Saint Michael's College has successfully accommodated students' physical needs with more than 30 years of experience in thoughtfully analyzing how every student has access to the residential college environment. Students' abilities range across the spectrum and each student's individual needs are addressed on that basis.

The student is responsible for accessing the resources available.  The Dean of Students works with each student who has self-identified his or her needs.  The Dean works individually with students and their families to facilitate what they need to be successful in their college career.

Students can find that the region's inclement weather can be somewhat of an obstacle due to the unpredictable and challenging winter weather patterns in Vermont.  The College's physical plant staff works with each student who needs clear access to learn his or her travel routes and ensure that all pathways are properly plowed and maintained.  Self-advocacy is always encouraged.

First-year students have the option of living in fully accessible suites.  However, the typical residency for first-year students is in older quad-style dormitories that do not offer access.  Therefore, first-year students with physical disabilities cannot be housed with the majority of their classmates.  For the remaining three years, students have the option of staying in the suite style accommodations with their classmates as well as in the townhouse area their senior year. What the College cannot offer in accessibility, we attempt to make up in human spirit.

The College also does not provide for personal care attendants.  As a Catholic institution, there is a fabric of volunteer students who can be called upon to help with day-to-day needs in the case that an attendant is temporarily unable to provide services.
