Many folks at SMC wonder how many students use the counseling services every academic year. Last year a little more than 17% of the undergraduate student population came to the SRC for formal appointment based assistance. Many more students called or stopped by for informal inquiries. The national average for college counseling centers is about 10% use, so our students are definitely trying to take good care of themselves!
The next question usually is, "Why do students seek out counseling?" Students have many issues they are trying to cope with, the most frequent are: relationships, self-esteem & identity, adjustment & social problems, depression, family, anxiety, alcohol & drugs, grief, negative past incidents, and eating disorders.
The following links give basic information on a few of these issues, the links on the next page include information on the other (and more) issues.
**** Please remember that this information, as well as any "quiz" you may take on the Internet, is only to help you clarify an issue. It is not a diagnosis and is no replacement for counseling or therapeutic assistance. Please make contact with a qualified professional if you have concerns with any of these issues.
Also, remember that most of the links are from other colleges, please refer back to the information in this website for where you can call for help.
