What to do if you suspect the flu!
Here are some campus resources that may assist you if you believe you are experiencing flu symptoms:
Student Health Services
- Call us at x2234 or stop down during our working hours to be evaluated.
- We can then determine if you have the flu and give you some things to aid in your recovery.
- We can give you a “FLU KIT” which consists of an instructional handout, thermometers, a mask, purell hand sanitizer, anti-fever medication and a meal voucher.
- You may be asked to go back to your room to recover. Friends or the residence life staff can go get your food and drink for you, using the meal voucher.
- DO NOT go to class or common areas on campus until your fever is gone for at least 24 hours.
- You will be asked to check in daily by phone or by person to Student Health Services.
- You will be given clear parameters to know whether you are getting better or worse and you will be instructed to return for medical care if you are worsening.
You will also be encouraged to get both the seasonal flu vaccine and the H1N1 flu vaccine as they become available. Check your email for messages from Student Health Services regarding both of these.
Residence Life Staff
- The RAs and RDs on campus will assist with getting you food and drink if you need it. Just ask!
- They will also, if needed, check in on you if you are confined to your room.
- They have educational posters and handouts on the flu as well.
SODEXHO
- Sodexho Food Services has developed a “Box Lunch” for the Flu. This will include soup, crackers, juice, tea, etc. and will be given out when someone presents your meal voucher to them.
- If needed, they can also help distribute food/drink to room-bound students.
Academics
- Academic life is working on creating a more flexible absentee policy in response to the H1N1 situation.
- Please contact your professors if you have been informed that you have the flu.
- Check with your individual professors on how to access your coursework.
Facilities
- Facilities staff is working hard on keeping all common areas as clean as possible.
- They are using a stronger disinfectant in dorms and in many of the “high touch” areas.
- Don’t forget to clean and disinfect your own “high touch” areas where you live, such as doorknobs, phones, remote controls, light switches and computer keyboards.
Communication
- Student Health Services will provide regular updates on their website
- Communication about H1N1 can also be seen through parent and public relation venues as well as emails directly sent to you.
