Wilderness Leaders

Students represent the core of our instructional staff and are responsible for teaching or leading a majority of our course offerings, ranging from day hikes to whitewater kayaking and ice climbing.

Student instructors are selected based on maturity, experience, leadership potential and dedication to outdoor pursuits.  Once selected, student leaders undergo a rigorous basic training program that includes over 160 hours of classroom and field practical experiences culminating in both written and practical assessments.

Our technical instructors are trained and assessed to industry standards in their chosen discipline through organizations such as SOLO Wilderness Medicine (SOLO), the American Canoe Association (ACA), the British Canoe Union North American (BCUNA), the American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA), Leave No Trace (LNT/NOLS) and the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE).
