Paying for your Semester Abroad

Step #1:

After you gain approval from Saint Michael's to study abroad, you must submit a separate application to the study abroad program you are interested in.  You must pay the following fees directly to the program provider. Saint Michael's will reimburse you for these charges after you provide documentation that confirms the confirmation deposit was received.

1. Application Fee.  This fee accompanies your program provider application.

2. Confirmation Deposit.  This deposit is sent to your program provider after you have been accepted into your program of choice. This deposit confirms your place in the program. When a popular program is almost full, failure to submit the confirmation deposit in a timely manner could result in your place being given to another applicant.

Step # 2:

After acceptance, your study abroad program will invoice Saint Michael's for the following charges.  These expenses will be paid by Saint Michael's as long as the total allowable program costs do not exceed the study abroad budget for that semester.

Tuition and Housing

  • Study abroad tuition, housing and required insurance.
  • Housing can be in the form of a homestay placement, university residence or off-campus apartment.  Speak with your program provider regarding housing options that are available in your host country.
  • Most programs include evacuation insurance (for extreme medical emergencies) as part of the program fees.  Refer to the program provider's website for details on insurance coverage.

Meals abroad

  • Some programs include meals as part of the program fee. Saint Michael's will pay the program directly for these charges.
  • Many foreign universities have no meal plans so students must provide for their own meals (called "self-catering"). Program providers will provide Saint Michael's with meal estimates for the semester. These estimates are often published on the program provider's websites. Saint Michael's will issue the student a check in the amount of the meal estimate.  The check will be made out in the student's name and will be sent to the student's home address.

Domestic & international flights to and from your program

  • Some programs provide airline ticketing services and flight costs are included in the invoices sent to Saint Michael's. Saint Michael's will pay the program directly for these charges.
  • Some programs have you make flight arrangements directly with their travel agent. For other programs, students book their flights independently. Book your economy class flight(s) with an travel agent, airline or on-line service. Submit a copy of your flight itinerary and proof of payment to the Study Abroad office. Saint Michael's will mail a reimbursement check to your home address.

Saint Michael's will NOT reimburse students for the following :

  • Fees related to obtaining passports, passport photos, visas, residence permits, vaccinations
  • Airline ticket change fees, hotel charges, excess baggage fees, trip insurance
  • Optional trips and events
  • Books, supplies and personal expenses
  • Optional or supplemental housing changes
  • Early program withdrawal fees
  • Housing deposits. This deposit is reimbursed to the student directly by the program provider at the conclusion of the semester.
  • Costs associated with independent student projects and research

Step # 3:

The Saint Michael's Student Accounts Office will mail your Saint Michael's invoice to your home, as usual.
The Saint Michael's Study Abroad Semester fee for Fall 2009 or Spring 2010 is $20,750.00

  • This bill represents one semester of tuition, housing, meals, and fees.
  • 90% of Saint Michael's College financial aid applies for one semester only. Tuition exchange and tuition remission cannot be used during a study abroad semester.
  • All non-Saint Michael's financial aid, loans, and scholarships apply (except for work-study) for one or two semesters abroad.
  • You can maintain your regular payment plan to Saint Michael's College for study abroad.

Study abroad expenses greater than the Saint Michael's study abroad fee (greater than $20,750) will be added to the student's Saint Michael's Student Account. Payment will be due upon receipt.
