The Study Abroad Process--Where to Begin
It is best to begin the process two semesters before you plan to study abroad: one semester to research and plan, and the other for completing your applications before you go abroad!
Research (Visit the Study Abroad Office or call 654.2222)
Go to an Information Meeting at the beginning of each semester.
Go to the Fall Returnee Fair in Alliot Lobby and the Study Abroad Fair at UVM in January.
Come to the Office of Study Abroad, understand your options, get all program information you need, understand the process
Talk to your advisor, review your course history, plan for the future, under- stand any constraints.
Send away for lots of program information. Read it all. Keep an open mind. Contact the programs, talk to a staff person, ask your questions directly about courses, location, housing, cost, etc. They're friendly. Use 800 numbers or email.
Use the World Wide Web for information on programs, countries, course syllabi, etc.
Review the Approved Programs List
Meet with your advisor and plan for graduation
Review your transcript for GPA, requirements, sequencing of courses
Confirm courses you still need to take, which ones you must take at SMC
Choose the best semester or time to study off-campus
Make sure your department can support your plan for study abroad
Review the program options carefully with the director of study abroad
Make your decision based upon your academic and personal goals
Complete and submit your applications:
Submit your SMC application to the Study Abroad Office for approval to go
Mail your program sponsor application for acceptance to their program as a Saint Michael's College student
Attend the mandatory Pre-Departure Meeting
Download and print the St. Michael's Study Abroad application forms, complete them and then return to the Study Abroad office located in the Klein Academic Commons.
