Two important aspects of the vision for Saint Michael's College are strength in community and the centrality of students. The main focus of the Sustainability Coordinator is to foster and nurture a campus culture of Sustainability. The college prides itself on its strong sense of community among staff, faculty and students. Any sustainability efforts need to focus on the community of Saint Michael's College. This means working closely with, interacting with and learning from everyone part of this great campus. Sustainability initiatives will be geared towards the wonderful people at the college. Explore the projects below to see how we are integrating sustainability behaviors into the campus culture.
Go Green Living Guide to Sustainable Living
"Go Green: Your College Guide to Sustainable Living at Saint Michael's College," was created in the Spring of 2008 by Zach Mangione, Campus Coordinator of Vermont Campus Energy Group, and Dan Sandberg ('09). The amazing Go Green guide contains information for students that will be useful for their time spent at Saint Michael's College and beyond! This guide is a way to get students started on the path of green living! Every first year student will be receiving a Go Green guide when they arrive for Orientation at the end of August as part of their Go Green Welcome Kit.
First Year Students' Go Green Welcome Kits
Green Up SMC and the Sustainability Coordinator have been working together this summer (08) to put together a Go Green Welcome Kit for all incoming first year students. This kit includes the following "tools" to help each first year student get start on the pathway to green living:
(1) Go Green Guide to Sustainable Living
(2) CFL bulb
(3) Go Green Reusable mug (made form recycled materials)
(4) Welcome letter from the Sustainability Coordinator
All first year students can find their Go Green Welcome Kits in their Residence Hall rooms when they arrive for Orientation on August 28, 2008! In addition to these Go Green Welcome Kits, students will aslo find a CCTA bus schedule in their room (students ride the CCTA for FREE, thanks to the college paying for students, staff, and faculty usage of the bus).
Bookstore Tote Bags & Incentive Program

The Saint Michael's College Bookstore has purchased reusable tote bags that will be given away (free) to all students with their purchase of text books! Also, when a customer brings his/her own bag for purchases (or doesn't need a plastic bag), the bookstore will donate money to a local charity (this incentive program is currently being worked on, more details to follow). Also, be on the lookout for a bin in the front of the store recycle and reuse plastic bags to reduce landfill waste!
The next time you're in the bookstore, be sure to thank Steve and Denise for doing their part to keep Saint Michael's College sustainable!
Reusable Mug Discount
Bring your own mug to Cafe Cheray and the Knight Stand and receive a discount (as well as peace of mind for reducing waste in the local landfills and saving trees). Also, remember to bring a mug to coffee shops in the Burlington area.
Launch of new Knight's List Website!
After a LOT of hard work by Grace Kelly, Saint Michael's amazing Director of Student Activities, with help from Brian MacDonald and Joe Pawlaczyk, Knight's List is finally here! This is a website that will provide a space for students, staff and faculty to post information abour Rides/Carpooling, Items Lost, Items for Sale (reuse old items and keep them out of landfills), and Items Found.
Click here to enter Knight's List!
Please keep in mind the following about the site:
1) It is brand new so there may be some kings to work out...if something doesn't appear to be working correctly or you have questions, feel free to send them to Grace Kelly or Brian MacDonald.
2) The site is for Saint Michael's students, staff and faculty only, the link cannot be sent to someone off campus.
3) The "Items for Sale" category is for individual items, such as a book or a snow board etc...this is not designed to act s an online store of sorts
4) In order to post information, you will be asked to register.
Enjoy the site and definitely take advantage of the Ride portion to carpool!
