Angela Irvine, the College’s director of foundation relations and sponsored programs, put her job skills to work in community service this summer when she secured $160,000 in grants to support the development of inner-city mountain bike programs in Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Denver and Oakland. Little Bellas is a mountain bike mentoring program for girls ages 7-16 and includes a junior mentoring and adventure program for girls 16-18. The program has served over 6,000 girls, included nearly 800 female mentors along with 21 female professional athletes as ambassadors, and operates over 60 programs in 20 states. Funding from the grants will support bikes, training, collaborations and mentor development in these major cities. Philadelphia has been in play for several years and has served as a model program engaging community partners to help get more girls on bikes. Several of the girls in that program have traveled to Vermont to participate in overnight camps. Others have gone on to enter junior racing programs in PA. Angela co-founded and has led the development of Little Bellas since 2007. Her co-founders, Sabra and Lea Davison, have worked tirelessly to promote the value of outdoor activities, the power of mentorship in sport and inclusion in a sport that often is not accessible. “This program wouldn’t exist without the 800 women that volunteer their time to get more girls on bikes,” Angela said.
