Becky Wigglesworth, Claudine Bedell and Amy Saks Pavese of the Education faculty organized a fall Workshop Series through the College’s Master of Arts in Teaching program fall semester, including a well-attended December 1 session with five panelists, all local educators with relevant experiences, on the topic “Antiracist Pedagogies: Justice and Healing at the Center.” Among the panelists was Rebecca Haslam ’03 of the Saint Michael’s Education faculty. Said Amy Saks Pavese, “We began the Fall Workshop Series with our first MAT cohort in 2018 as a way to extend our teacher candidates’ understanding of timely and relevant topics in the field, with a particular focus on social-emotional learning.”

Claudine Bedell, Rebecca Haslam, Amy Knight, Amy Saks Pavese, and Becky Wigglesworth of the education faculty shared at the Teaching Professor Conference in June their experiences designing and coordinating the new Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program launched in May 2019. The conference included both a virtual component and an in-person presentation in New Orleans. The team’s presentation, “Fostering Engaged Participation to Promote Relevant and Rigorous Learning,” highlighted the mission-driven design of the MAT and the program’s focus on emotional, behavioral, and cognitive engagement of students as significant factors contributing to the program’s success.
