When is the library open?

The library is open until midnight on weeknights and 6:00 pm on the weekend. The library stays open until 1:00 am during exams. For more information, see Library Hours.

How big is the library collection?

The library has over 470,000 books (including 230,000 ebooks), 120,000 online journals and magazines, 30,000 streaming videos and 5000 DVDs, and adds about 4,000 new items each year. For more information see Statistics.

How much do St. Mike's students use the library?

Over the course of an academic year the average SMC student goes to the library 50 times, visits the library website 40 times, and searches library research databases 90 times. For more information see Statistics.

How long can I check things out?

Students can check out books for 28 days and DVDs for 7 days. Items can be renewed online or by phone if no one else has requested them. For more information see Borrowing Materials.

Can I get help doing my research?

Yes! Students can come to the reference desk or schedule a research appointment with a subject specialist. We are always happy to give one on one help. For more information see Research Help.

Is wireless internet access available in the library?

Yes. High speed wireless access to the internet and MikeNet is available throughout the library. For more information see Wireless Network.

Can I access the library from my room and off campus?

Yes. The campus network allows you to access almost all research databases, online journals, the library catalog, and online books from anywhere on campus. You can log in from off campus with your Mikenet username and password. For more information see Off Campus Access.

Can I borrow books and articles from other libraries?

Yes. The library can get books or articles from almost anywhere in the world. The service is free to students and usually takes just a few days. For more information see Interlibrary Loan. If you can’t wait, you can also check out books at UVM, Champlain, and other area college libraries.

Are there jobs for students in the library?

Yes. The library employs about 50 students through the work-study program. Students interested in working in the library should contact the Financial Aid office. For more information see Student Employees.

If I get hungry while I am studying, is there somewhere in the library I can get a snack?

Yes. The Durick's Den study lounge has vending machines with drinks and snacks. For more information see Food and Drink.
