American Studies Major


The American Studies major requires the completion of 10 courses. 

Required for the American Studies Major:


  • AM 101 – Introduction to American Studies

Choose one 200-level AM topics course:


  • AM 201 – Topics in American Studies
  • AM 220 – On Looking
  • AM 225 – American Childhood
  • AM 227 – Foundations of U.S. Latino/a Literature and Culture
  • AM 229 – Introduction to Cuban Literature and Culture

Choose three of the following survey courses:


  • EN 251 – American Literature I
  • EN 253 – American Literature II
  • HI 101 – U.S. History to 1865
  • HI 103 – U.S. History since 1865

And take:


  • AM 380 – American Publics

In consultation with your advisor, identify a concentration and take 4 approved electives selected from the list of approved courses for that track. No more than 2 of the courses may be from the same department:

  • Race and Ethnicity Studies
  • The Americas
  • Expressive Cultures
  • Civic Communities
  • Childhood Studies
