Majors: English and Theatre
What do you do for a living?
I am an editorial/product assistant at an academic publisher in Burlington, Massachusetts. The company is called Jones & Bartlett Learning and the parent company is called Ascend Learning. At JBL, we have several different lists for academic textbooks and online resources. I work on the Nursing and Medicine List. I work directly with authors and other professionals in the editorial department to submit manuscripts to production. I work one on one with authors and manage 10+ books at a time all at different stages of the production process. I prep the manuscripts and then launch the books into production.
How did your experience at Saint Michael's help prepare you for your career?
I was an English major, which helped the most. I also worked in the Writing Center for 3 years and I had an academic internship with Fomite Press in Burlington, Vermont for my final semester at Saint Michael's.
What is your favorite memory from your time at St. Mike's?
It is so difficult to choose just one. I was lucky enough to have an incredible four years at SMC and I miss it terribly. I would have to say, my favorite class was either my English Senior Seminar Class with Professor Kerry Shea on Science Fiction and Fantasy literature, or Shakespeare in Performance, which I took in England with Professor Nick Clary.
How did you translate you volunteer experience at SMC into giving back to your community?
At my work, we actually have a charitable committee! So far we have made no-sew blankets for children in need, had an ice cream fundraiser, and did a walk for cancer research!
Any advice for students at St. Mike's?
Value EVERY minute you have there. It goes so quick. SMC absolutely prepares you for the real world, but it doesn't prepare you for saying goodbye to an incredible place that so many of us are lucky to call a home.
