DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we will share some of the details of our recent publications and showcase ongoing course enrichment efforts and other features of this initiative. \nWith initial support from the Saint Michael’s NSF S-STEM grant\, our interdisciplinary group of faculty and students has explored relationships between mathematics and chemistry and encouraged more students to study both disciplines. For example\, we have highlighted these interdisciplinary links through enhanced pedagogy for undergraduate mathematics (especially calculus) and chemistry courses.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Russell Valentino explores translation as a distinct practice that provides key insights into uses of generative AI. As a mode of writing at the interstices of analysis and “pure” creativity\, translation combines research and invention with the need to convey messages across linguistic\, historical\, and cultural boundaries in a manner that is not just accurate but also effective. How do we recognize when we’ve failed or succeeded? How do we predict that one strategy is more or less likely to move our intended audience? The answers to such questions help to provide a limit case for the use of generative AI not just in translating but in other areas of inquiry as well. \nDr. Valentino’s talk will be followed by Q&A with the audience. Co-sponsored by the First Year Seminar Program\, the Institute for Global Engagement\, and the Global Languages & Cultures Program at Saint Michael’s College.

DESCRIPTION:Managerial Ethics (BU103) is raising money for the non-profit Wreaths Across America. This organization raises money to put wreaths on the headstones of veterans who have passed away. One wreath costs $17. This year\, the goal for Vermont is to get 4\,800 wreaths sponsored by December 13. Our class is organizing a dodgeball tournament on November 9 at 3:30 p.m. in Tarrant to help raise money for the cause. The cost per team is $25\, or $5 per person. We hope to get many people involved and raise money for a good cause!

DESCRIPTION:Math-Stats Colloquium: “Strategies for Surviving Single Elimination Tournament Knockout Pools” \nTuesday\, March 5\, at 4:15 p.m.\nCheray Science Hall\, Room 101 \nJoin Professor John Trono\, Chair of Computer Science Department\, in this presentation about single elimination tournament knockout pools. \nIn a typical knockout (KO) pool\, each entrant must select a winning team every week of the regular season. If they fail to do so\, they no longer have a chance of winning that pool since that loss (or tie)\, by their chosen team\, has removed them from the list of entrants who are still alive in that pool. Also\, each entrant is allowed to select a team just once during that season. If this style of pool is extended to a single elimination tournament (SET)\, like Wimbledon\, the World Cup\, NCAA’s March Madness\, etc.\, then different players/teams must be taken in each round. \nStrategies for outlasting every other entrant in such a KO pool will be considered in this talk\, and results from recent March Madness tournaments will also be examined. \nLight refreshments will be served.

DESCRIPTION:Radical Empathy: Taking Action/Bridging Divides\nAnnual Sutherland Lecture Series  \nWednesday\, January 22\n4 p.m.\nRecital Hall\, McCarthy Arts Center \nTerri Givens is a Professor of Political Science at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She was the Provost’s Advisor on the Strategy to Address Anti-Black Racism at McGill University from 2021-2024\, where she supported the provost’s offices work to increase the hiring of and support for Black faculty\, staff and students. She is formerly the CEO of the Center for Higher Education Leadership and has worked with a variety of colleges\, universities and ed tech companies on issues related to innovation and excellence in higher education. As the author of the book “Radical Empathy: Finding a Path to Bridging Racial Divides\,” she is a sought after consultant and speaker on issues related to leadership and inclusion. She has more than 30 years of experience in higher education\, politics\, international affairs\, and nonprofits. She is an accomplished speaker and uses her platform to develop leaders with an understanding of the importance of diversity and inclusion\, while encouraging personal growth through empathy. \nTerri is the author/editor of books and articles on immigration policy\, European politics and right-wing politics. Her most recent published books are Radical Empathy: Finding a Path to Bridging Racial Divides\, from Policy Press and The Roots of Racism: The Politics of White Supremacy in the US and Europe\, published by Bristol University Press. Her book\, Reckoning: Creating Positive Change through Radical Empathy is forthcoming in 2025.

DESCRIPTION:Annual Humanities Center Lecture – Philosopher Myisha Cherry\n “Forgiveness: What We Get Wrong and How to Do Better” \nThursday\, October 17\, at 4 p.m.\nMcCarthy Arts Center Recital Hall \n\nPlease join us for “Failures of Forgiveness: What We Get Wrong and How to Do Better\,” a lecture by Myisha Cherry\, PhD\, who is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of California (Riverside) and Director of the Emotion and Society Lab.\n\nSages from Cicero to Oprah have told us that forgiveness requires us to let go of negative emotions and that it has a unique power to heal our wounds. Dr. Cherry argues that these beliefs couldn’t be more wrong—and that the ways we think about and use forgiveness\, personally and as a society\, can often do more harm than good. In this talk\, Cherry presents a new and healthier understanding of forgiveness—one that gives us a better chance to recover from wrongdoing and move toward “radical repair.” She also addresses how writing her latest book\, Failures of Forgiveness\, led her to her current research on how we approach love.\n\nDr. Cherry’s books include: How to Love (forthcoming\, Riverhead/Basic)\, Failures of Forgiveness (Princeton\, 2023)\, The Case for Rage: Why Anger is Essential to Anti-racist Struggle (2021\, Oxford)\, UnMuted: Conversations on Prejudice\, Oppression\, and Social Justice (Oxford\, 2019)\, and The Moral Psychology of Anger (Rowman & Littlefield\, 2017)\, co-edited with Owen Flanagan. Her work on emotions and race has appeared in The Atlantic\, Boston Review\, Los Angeles Times\, Salon\, Huffington Post\, WomanKind\, and New Philosopher Magazine.
