SUMMARY:E&J 'Inna Reggae Style' Arts\, Activism\, and Authentic Voice Intergenerational Conversation with Bobby Hackney\, Edwin Owusu\, and MediSun
DESCRIPTION:Saint Michael’s College Institute for Equity and Justice presents E&J ‘Inna Reggae Style’ with three men of the African Diaspora now living in New England. An event honoring the legacy of Vermont’s own Bobby Hackney in conversation with Edwin Owusu of Ghanaian heritage and MediSun of Caribbean heritage. The conversation brings together three musical migration narratives beginning with Detroit and ‘A Band Called Death’ and a migration to Vermont that gave birth to the Reggae band Lambsbread. Bobby Hackney mentored Edwin Owusu who’s known in Hip Hop circles as MC SINNN. MediSun comes to us from a Caribbean community in Boston\, Massachusetts as a son of the Afro-Caribbean Diaspora. Each brings their expertise by way of musical traditions ranging from Metal to Hip Hop to Reggae. \nJoin us as we have a conversation about how equity and justice show up in the lived experiences and artistic expression of three phenomenal artists\, as we honor the elder\, Bobby Hackney. \nRegister to join online

SUMMARY:E & J 'Inna Reggae Style' Lecture and Conversation with MediSun
DESCRIPTION:MediSun will present a lecture on the history of Reggae and Rastafari. The lecture and conversation to follow will provide a foundational understanding of how equity and justice show up in the lived experiences of Jamaican – and Caribbean- people. He explains how reggae music and performance are an expression of the struggles of ‘the people’ over generations. MediSun takes the audience on an intellectual and academic journey from ‘folk music’ to Ska to Rock Steady to Reggae providing insight into how the music is born out of the struggle of Ethiopians who were taken to the West. \nRegister to join online

SUMMARY:The White Peril: A Conversation with Omo Moses
DESCRIPTION:Omo was born in 1972 in Tanzania\, where his parents had fled to escape targeted harassment by the US government. He did not encounter white supremacy until the family moved back to America when he was 4. Here he learned what it meant to be Black. He came of age in a Black enclave of Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, became a passionate basketball player\, lived in the shadow of his father’s Civil Rights work but did not feel like a part of it until his college basketball career came to an unceremonious end. Unsure what to do next\, he took up his father’s offer to go with him to Mississippi and teach math to Algebra Project students. Omo didn’t know it yet\, but it was among those young people that he would find his purpose.\n\nIn The White Peril\, Omo Moses deftly interweaves his own life story with excerpts from both his great-grandfather’s sermons and the writings of his father\, the civil rights activist Bob Moses. The result is a powerful chorus of voices that spans 3 generations of an African American family\, all shining a light on the Black experience\, all calling fiercely for racial justice.\n\nThis book is at once a coming-of-age story\, a multigenerational family memoir\, an epic father-son road trip\, a searing account of the Black male experience\, and a work that powerfully revives Rev. Moses’s demand for liberation.

SUMMARY:Water for All: A Path to Global Health and Equity
DESCRIPTION:Water for All: A Path to Global Health and Equity \nWednesday April 9\nPanel – 12 p.m. in McCarthy Arts Center\nWalk-A-Thon – 1 p.m. in the McCarthy Arts Center parking lot \n\nWalk-a-thon Registration & Donation Form\n\nThis campus—and community-sponsored collaboration aims to reflect the mission and impact of SMC students on real-world issues\, particularly a lack of access to clean water. The initiative seeks to leverage education\, outreach\, and community development with our community partner\, St. Francis Xavier Parish & School. Groups from across the college are coming together to support the St. Francis Xavier students in raising money for 4 communities in southeastern Mexico to support Healing Waters International with the upcoming project of designing and installing clean water infrastructure in these communities. \nThe project originated with Father Yvon Royer- SMC Alum\, 3 years ago when his former Parishes were involved in helping a Community in San José Monteverde\, México\, have clean drinking water for the first time.  They worked with Healing Waters\, a Christian company that works mostly in South America focusing on working with communities to assess what their needs are for water\, the possible source\, and what needs to be done to bring the Community drinkable water. \nThroughout this academic year\, Father Yvon has been leading both educational and fundraising initiatives at Saint Francis Xavier School (SFX) in Winooski. Students have heard from speakers\, conducted fundraising events at their local parishes\, and will participate in a fundraising Walk-A-Thon. To support this initiative\, Saint Michael’s College will host a series of educational events on April 9th and the SFX students will have access to everything we have to offer\, from our pre-service educators to our MakerSpace to our ability to bring in high-impact speakers\, which will build awareness\, increase education\, and fundraise for clean water projects in the coastal region of Chiapas México\, a stand-alone project in the community “23 de Enero” and project Rosalbali which support the communities of Rosarito\, Alianza\, and Albores. \nOn Wednesday\, April 9th\, all SFX students and staff will be visiting SMC to take part in the series of events. A highlight of this day is a 1-hour panel with Walter Nonemaker\, Director at Healing Waters International\, Oliver Niyonshuti\, SMC international student with personal experience related to lack of clean water in Rwanda\, and Judy Dow\, local Indigenous Scholar and Educator and Executive Director of Gedakina. The panel will take place at 12:00 pm at the McCarthy Art Center. \nAfter the panel\, we will join a call for action about access to clean water as a human right as well as fundraising. The Walk-A-Thon will start at 1 pm\, and walkers will gather at the McCarthy Arts parking lot. More information will be available next week. We are counting on our SMC community to make this initiative a success! \nPlease join us\, bring your classes to the panel\, encourage students to participate in the Walk-A-Thon\, and donate!

SUMMARY:Post Election - Moving Forward Together - Gallery Walk
DESCRIPTION:Post Election – Moving Forward Together – Gallery Walk \nTuesday\, January 21\, at 9 a.m.\nSecond Floor\, Dion Family Student Center \nOnce all the campaigning and voting is over\, we are left to process the results and prepare for the newly elected to take office. When these results aren’t what we hoped for\, the prevailing narrative that we are divided can feel true and the future can seem less hopeful. There is another option– we can seek understanding and move forward together as a nation. Faculty\, staff\, & students are invited to the gallery walk to quietly reflect on questions such as: What do the outcomes of the election mean to you and your community? How are you planning to move forward? What is your experience interacting or staying connected to others you care about who feel differently about the election? What common ground solutions would you like to explore regardless of election results? \nProfessors\, if you would like to have your class participate in the gallery walk\, please sign up using the link (https://tinyurl.com/3djswwbw). There will be journals and pens available in the Farrell Room. \nSponsored by Be Well\, Bergeron Counseling\, and the Institute for Equity & Justice.
