SUMMARY:“Is It Good?”: AI Tools\, the Practice of Translating\, and Intercultural Communication.
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Russell Valentino explores translation as a distinct practice that provides key insights into uses of generative AI. As a mode of writing at the interstices of analysis and “pure” creativity\, translation combines research and invention with the need to convey messages across linguistic\, historical\, and cultural boundaries in a manner that is not just accurate but also effective. How do we recognize when we’ve failed or succeeded? How do we predict that one strategy is more or less likely to move our intended audience? The answers to such questions help to provide a limit case for the use of generative AI not just in translating but in other areas of inquiry as well. \nDr. Valentino’s talk will be followed by Q&A with the audience. Co-sponsored by the First Year Seminar Program\, the Institute for Global Engagement\, and the Global Languages & Cultures Program at Saint Michael’s College.

SUMMARY:Annual Saint Edmund Lecture Sponsored by the Edmundite Center for Faith and Culture
DESCRIPTION:Annual Saint Edmund Lecture \nSponsored by the Edmundite Center for Faith and Culture \nThursday\, November 14\, at 4:30 p.m.\nRoy Room\, Dion Student Center \nDr. Charles Briggs\, PhD\, a professor of medieval history in the Department of History at the University of Vermont\, will deliver the 2024 Annual Saint Edmund Lecture on Thursday\, November 14\, 2024\, at 4:30 p.m. in the Roy Event Center in the Dion Family Student Center (third floor). The title of the presentation is: “A Question of Counsel: Edmund of Abingdon’s Speculum religiosorum and Medieval ‘Mirror’ Literature.” \nAfter growing up in New York\, Dr. Briggs majored in history at Grinnell College in Iowa\, before going on to receive his M.Litt. from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1993). After a decade and a half of teaching and administration at Georgia Southern University\, where he was Professor of History\, Briggs returned to the more amenable climes and landscape of the Northeast. A specialist in the intellectual and cultural history of Europe in the thirteenth through early sixteenth centuries\, he teaches courses in late medieval and early modern European history\, global history\, historical methods\, and the history of the book. \nSaint Edmund of Abingdon is the patron of the Society of Saint Edmund\, the founding religious community of priests and brothers who established Saint Michael’s College. The Annual Saint Edmund Lecture honors Saint Edmund not only as the patron of the Edmundite but more specifically for his major work\, Speculum religiosorum (The Mirror of Religious)\, which is a significant writing by Saint Edmund of Abingdon\, who was Archbishop of Canterbury in the early 13th century. Written around 1213-1214\, this text serves as a spiritual guide for religious life\, combining catechetical material with contemplative practices. The work draws on the teachings of early Christian authorities like Augustine and Gregory\, as well as mystical writers such as Bernard of Clairvaux. It was originally composed in Latin and later translated into Anglo-Norman French and Middle English\, reflecting its widespread influence and appeal.

SUMMARY:Annual Humanities Center Lecture – Philosopher Myisha Cherry
DESCRIPTION:Annual Humanities Center Lecture – Philosopher Myisha Cherry\n “Forgiveness: What We Get Wrong and How to Do Better” \nThursday\, October 17\, at 4 p.m.\nMcCarthy Arts Center Recital Hall \n\nPlease join us for “Failures of Forgiveness: What We Get Wrong and How to Do Better\,” a lecture by Myisha Cherry\, PhD\, who is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of California (Riverside) and Director of the Emotion and Society Lab.\n\nSages from Cicero to Oprah have told us that forgiveness requires us to let go of negative emotions and that it has a unique power to heal our wounds. Dr. Cherry argues that these beliefs couldn’t be more wrong—and that the ways we think about and use forgiveness\, personally and as a society\, can often do more harm than good. In this talk\, Cherry presents a new and healthier understanding of forgiveness—one that gives us a better chance to recover from wrongdoing and move toward “radical repair.” She also addresses how writing her latest book\, Failures of Forgiveness\, led her to her current research on how we approach love.\n\nDr. Cherry’s books include: How to Love (forthcoming\, Riverhead/Basic)\, Failures of Forgiveness (Princeton\, 2023)\, The Case for Rage: Why Anger is Essential to Anti-racist Struggle (2021\, Oxford)\, UnMuted: Conversations on Prejudice\, Oppression\, and Social Justice (Oxford\, 2019)\, and The Moral Psychology of Anger (Rowman & Littlefield\, 2017)\, co-edited with Owen Flanagan. Her work on emotions and race has appeared in The Atlantic\, Boston Review\, Los Angeles Times\, Salon\, Huffington Post\, WomanKind\, and New Philosopher Magazine. She is also the host of the UnMute Podcast\, where she interviews philosophers about the social and political issues of our day.\n\nDr. Cherry’s visit is generously supported by: The Humanities Center\, the Vice-President of Academic Affairs\, the Department of Philosophy and Ethics\, the Center for Faith and Culture\, the Institute for Equity and Justice\, and the UVM Philosophy Department.
