Saint Michael’s College proudly recognizes Suzanne M. Bette ’01 as Alumna of the Year, honoring her entrepreneurial vision, industry leadership, and unwavering commitment to community.
A 2001 graduate with a degree in history, Sue was an engaged and accomplished student during her time at Saint Michael’s, competing on both the women’s lacrosse and rugby teams and embracing the values of teamwork, leadership, and service that continue to guide her work today. Her experience on Winooski Park helped shape a deep belief in the power of community—an ethos that would become foundational to her career.
In 2009, Sue founded Bluebird Hospitality, including Bluebird Barbeque in Burlington, creating a business rooted in connection, creativity, and care for others. Her work has earned national recognition, including a James Beard Award nomination and honors from the food industry as one of the most influential restaurant executives in the country. Through her leadership, Bluebird has become not only a celebrated dining destination, but also a reflection of her belief that food can bring people together and strengthen communities.
Beyond her success as a restaurateur, Sue has emerged as a powerful national advocate for the hospitality industry. As a member of the leadership team of the Independent Restaurant Coalition and co-founder of Vermont Independent Restaurants, she has worked tirelessly to support independent restaurants and the people behind them—particularly during the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Her efforts helped elevate the voices of small businesses and secure critical relief for restaurants across the country.
Sue’s leadership extends into civic engagement as well, including her service on the Vermont Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Across every aspect of her work, she brings a spirit of collaboration, advocacy, and purpose that reflects the values instilled during her time at Saint Michael’s.
Throughout her career, Sue Bette has exemplified what it means to be a Purple Knight—leading with courage, supporting others, and building community in meaningful and lasting ways. Her impact is felt not only in Burlington and Vermont, but across the broader hospitality landscape, making her a most deserving recipient of the Alumni of the Year Award.
