Class of 2020 Commencement Weekend

We look forward to welcoming you, your classmates, and your family members back to campus to celebrate your accomplishments with our Saint Michael’s College community. This schedule outlines the planned events for the weekend, but please feel welcome to participate in any of our Alumni and Family Weekend events.

Please complete this registration as soon as you can so we can ensure the best experience possible for you and your guests. There is no limit to seating and tickets for the ceremony on Saturday morning. See who is already registered by following this link. Please provide any questions to events@smcvt.edu.

Friday, Sept. 17th

We are so excited to welcome you back to campus this weekend to celebrate. After the past 18 months of anticipation, it’s hard to believe the day is finally upon us!

Here is some important information about the events of the weekend and instructions for participating. Please share all the relevant information with your guests.

Please also take note and remind them that for the safety of all in attendance and in our community, masks are required for all attending the Commencement event and the reception following. You and your guests should also have proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative PCR test result from within 72 hours of the event.

  • Graduates can check in from 9:00 – 9:30 in Alliot and pick up name cards which are required for the ceremony.
  • The ceremony will begin promptly at 10:00 am. Guests should be seated by 9:30 am. As a reminder, all events will be held outdoors, rain or shine, so please come prepared.
  • In the event of extreme weather, Commencement may be delayed.
  • Graduates should arrive no later than 9:15am and report to Alliot Hall to check-in. After checking in graduates should gather in the Hoehl parking lot area.
  • You should bring your caps and gowns; those without caps and gowns can obtain them from the SMC Campus Store during regular hours (9:00-5:00pm) throughout the week or beginning at 9:00am on Saturday.
  • Graduates will process from the Hoehl parking lot toward the ceremony location in front of the library. Our traditional bagpipe group will lead the way.
  • Graduates will not be organized in alphabetical order.
  • At check-in, you will receive an index card with your name and degree printed on it. Please verify this information and hold on to this card. You will hand it to a staff member as you proceed to the Commencement stage to have your name called.
  • Graduates will be handed a Saint Michael’s College diploma holder for recognition and to pose with for your official commencement photo. Graduates were given holders in May 2020, so please return the holder to a staff member after your photo is taken.
  • You will be able to remove your masks and pose for your photo on the ramp away from the stage after your name is called.

Post-Commencement Reception

300s Field

  • The Class of 2020 will recess at the end of the ceremony, and can meet their guests, families, and College staff and faculty at the reception area on the 300s field.
  • Light refreshments will be available at the reception.
  • Please wear your mask except when eating or drinking, and please be mindful of others’ comfort level with hugs, handshakes, and other expressions of love and appreciation. We want all involved to feel comfortable and welcome celebrating your valued accomplishments.

Retirement Gathering for Prof. George Dameron: 11:30

Join history department faculty, students and alumni as we thank Prof. Dameron for his service to Saint Michael’s and its students and wish him well in retirement.

Trucks, Taps and Tunes for 2020: 5:00-7:00 pm

300s Field
No Oktoberfest? No problem! We’ll be hosting the Class of 2020 for a special closed event with food trucks, beer taps, and music to celebrate your special Commencement day with classmates and friends.

  • This event is a special celebration planned just for Class of 2020 graduates and one guest.
  • Please register your guest at this link. Guests must bring photo ID and arrive with their Class of 2020 alumni host.
  • Plentiful food and drink will be available. Attendees will have free access to food and soft drinks; beer and cider will be available for purchase.
  • All Class of 2020 graduates and their guests should stay inside the event area, and current SMC students are not permitted to attend the event.
  • The food truck event will be a festive return to campus, and it is taking place during an active academic semester, which is an uncommon occurrence. Please respect the space of our current students and avoid gathering in campus residential areas.
