Alix Lara ’16

Presented by Jen Conetta ’09

Hi, everyone. I’m Jen Conetta, Class of 2009, and director of annual giving and stewardship and it is my privilege to read the Young Alumna of the Year citation for our very own, Alix Lara, Class of 2016.

A few years ago, the Alumni Board of Directors started giving an award to a Young Alum of the Year because young alumni frequently do so much for the College. Their memories are fresh, their energy is limitless and their bonds to classmates, faculty and staff remain strong. Alix Lara is one of these amazing, dedicated young alums.

As a student, Alix served as Chair of Fix it with Five, served as MOVE volunteer and work study student, and took two domestic service trips to Texas and New Orleans, which are among her favorite SMC memories. She served as a Writing Coach in the Writing Center and a Teaching Assistant for the Horses and Healing first-year seminar.

After graduation, Alix headed to New York City, where she first got involved with alumni events. When she moved to Boston, Alix immediately joined the Boston alumni group, attending and hosting various events in the area and serving on the planning committee. That work has led her to her current position on the Alumni Board of Directors as Club Representative for Boston. Alix brings great perspective on the priorities and aspirations of today’s students and eagerly shares with the more senior members of the board. She has been a key member of the board working to enhance the Career Symposium as well as boost membership on SMC Connect, our online community building platform. Whenever there is a task to be done, Alix is always the first to raise her hand.

Alix is employed as Foundations Coordinator for the nonprofit Union of Concerned Scientists, working with her colleagues on the greatest issues of the day with a common belief: “Science can and should be a force for good.” In her free time, she serves on the board of the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network of Boston. And Alix is a longtime volunteer at Camp Sunshine, a retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

In her free time, Alix loves exploring the outdoors, playing with her dog, crafting, and hanging her hammock in the park. You deserve a break, swinging in the sunshine, but we know that your dedication to St. Mike’s will continue to be a force for good and keep you busy in the future!

In grateful recognition for all that you have done so far, Alix, I’m proud to present you with the Young Alumni of the Year Award for 2021, with our thanks and congratulations.
