Craig Duffy ’06
Presented by Prof. Carolyn Lukens-Olson
Good evening, everyone. I’m Carolyn Lukens-Olson, one of the Modern Language professor here at Saint Michael’s. I am also Craig Duffy’s former advisor and it’s my privilege to read his Alumni of the Year Citation.
He’s been called “The poster child of St. Mike’s alumni,” holding nearly every volunteer role possible. As his professor and friend, I would add that Craig Duffy was one of the most outstanding students ever to set foot on this campus. Good to the core, kind to a fault and as quick witted as anyone you ever met, Craig is a wonderful example of what every college wants their alumni to be.
As a Spanish major, Craig spent a year abroad in Salamanca, Spain, broadening his worldview and perfecting his knowledge and appreciation for the Spanish language and culture. Even with a year away from campus, Craig made an indelible impression at Saint Michael’s, where he served as a Founder’s Society tour guide, was active with Campus Ministry, was a member of our Spanish club, Alianza, and took a service and study trip to El Salvador as a sophomore. To top it off, he received the Spanish Department’s Luis Quiroz Award his senior year.
After graduating from St. Mike’s and while earning his MBA from Assumption College, Craig became a supply-chain logistics specialist. As luck would have it, he landed at Boston-based pharmaceutical company Moderna in January 2020. I like to think Craig’s liberal arts education, problem-solving and interpersonal skills helped him hit the ground not just running, but racing, working to facilitate the critical clinical trials that allowed Moderna to begin vaccinating the world against COVID-19.
Craig has served as a Class Agent, admissions representative at college fairs, committee member or chair for his class reunions, longtime member and past president of the Alumni Board of Directors, and Career Symposium panelist. The amount of hours Craig has spent volunteering for St. Mike’s is nearly unmatched. He is just now finishing a two-year term on Saint Michael’s Board of Trustees. Craig gives generously to the College, and is a member of the President’s Medallion Society.
While helping to cure the world from COVID and serving SMC in countless, high profile ways, Craig and his wife Kaitlin have been very busy raising their two beautiful boys, Ryan and Colin, SMC classes of 2039 and 2042, respectively.
In a past alumni profile, Craig reflected, “I got so much out of my Saint Michael’s experience that if I’m able to help even one student, whether making an annual gift or being a resource in their career searches, that makes me feel like I’m able to give back at least part of what I got out of Saint Michael’s. I feel that, for all they gave me, it’s the least I can do.”
Well, Craig, the least we can do today is present you with the Alumni of the Year Award, for all you’ve done for Saint Michael’s. You have our appreciation and our heartfelt thanks.
