Head Start Pre-school Teacher through Teach for America, Phoenix, AZ

I just finished my commitment with Teach for America in Phoenix where I've been teaching pre-school for Head Start. I'd never been in Arizona, but I was placed here because I speak Spanish. Some of my students were English language learners, and their parents as well, so my Spanish has been really useful to build relationships with families.

Being a political science major taught me how to think. With what is happening in Arizona with the issue of immigration, having political interest and understanding helps me know better what my families are going through at home.

It's been one of the most challenging experiences I've ever had, but also so rewarding. I’m falling in love with teaching, although I'd never worked with kids before this. In fact I'm going to teach kindergarten next year in Phoenix.

Professor of Political Science John Hughes was my favorite professor. Not only was he interesting and funny, but also so knowledgeable about everything that was going on in the world. I liked the way professors are active in their beliefs, be it the local food movement for Mike Bosia or AIDS activism for Trish Siplon..

I transferred to Saint Mike's from Boston University. I felt so welcomed at St. Mike's, and I loved the education that I got and the experience that I had.
