Vermont Campus Compact Award
Father Prevel Award, the highest award given to a male graduate at commencement
When I was looking for a college, I wanted a certain kind of community that I knew I would find in a small, Catholic college. And I definitely got what I wanted at St. Mike's.
I was a double major in biology and education and I was pretty involved as a student. I studied abroad in Costa Rica as the School for Field Study. I was a service trip coordinator for MOVE, and I went on extended service trips to Long Island, Texas, Kentucky and India. I was the secretary of student policy in the SA, served on the Centennial Committee, worked with the Echo Online Magazine, had a radio show called Pop Rocks on WWPV, and was a eucharistic minister for Campus Ministry.
When I graduated, I went to Honduras and taught for a year in an orphanage there. When I came back, I taught bilingual (Spanish and English) third grade in New Britain, Connecticut before returning to Vermont to teach fourth and fifth grade at Champlain Elementary in Burlington for 5 years. Now I teach third grade in Brazil, where I include a lot of science in my daily teaching.
I really like working with kids, and I've always valued education. Being book smart and life smart are both important so I try to emphasize them equally in my teaching. And I laugh every single day at work. Being here can be hilarious at times, and it's great that my students and I are comfortable laughing together.
I've stayed connected to St. Mike's through my professors, who I still call on when I have questions, and through my friends. I earned a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) endorsement though Saint Michael's MATESOL program and I am earning my master's in education at Saint Michael's, with a concentration in reading.
