Laurence Clerfeuille, associate professor of modern languages/French, helped lead a group of 8 students spending 3 weeks in Quebec City with a Saint Michael’s College Academic Study Trip (May 13-June 2) to study French language and Quebecois culture – including a unique two-hour long walking tour of Québec City in French to hear about Quebec’s Black History, led by the rapper Webster, who earlier in the year had visited her classes. In early April she also led a French Club trip to Montreal.

Laurence Clerfeuille, assistant professor of modern languages, has learned her article, "Les masques noirs de Cunégonde: relecture fanonienne des nouvelles de Fatou Diome sur l'immigration dans La Préférence Nationale," was accepted for publication in Mélanges francophones, Issue 8: "Dialogues francophones" [forthcoming]. At the April 2013 conference of Société des Professeurs Français et Francophones d’Amérique, in New York City, she delivered a paper, "Création d’une mémoire féminine chez Evelyne Trouillot, Jessica Fièvre et Barbara Bastien." At the Haitian Studies Association Conference in Jamaica, NY, in November 2012 she presented the papers "Entre raison et déraison: représentations de New-York dans "Allô!... New-York" and "Which One?", deux nouvelles d’Evelyne Trouillot." She also has received two recent grants, including: Tournées French Film Festival Grant from the French Embassy in the U.S. for the screening of five French Films at Saint Michael’s in December 2012; and a Library Acquisition Grant (by the Quebec government) for the purchase of books and DVDs from Quebec for Saint Michael's library (December 2012). Laurence presented the film Biguine at the Alliance Française of the Lake Champlain Region with an introduction to Martinique writer Patrick Chamoiseau's Créolité movement in May 2013. In June 2013 she also did volunteer work in Senegal for three weeks at Waranka, a school project where she gave French reading classes to primary school children and literacy classes to adults and started newsletters in French and English in Guinaw Rail, Senegal. On the Saint Michael's campus in March 2013, she was co-organizer, with Peter Vantine, assistant professor of modern languages, of the Tournées French Film Festival. Each of the five films was presented by speakers from the French Club, Religious Studies Department, the Center for Women and Gender, and a Burlington High School Teacher. She also was organizer of a lecture by Haitian Writer Evelyne Trouillot in November 2012.
