Brian McCarthy, faculty, fine arts/music and director of the college’s Jazz Orchestra, recently was featured in a double-facing-page photo spread of Vermont Life Magazine. The image, with Brian’s saxophone beside him and a striking maroon backdrop, had text overlaid on the right page with information about a concert that Brian performed with his quintet at Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater in February. The short text read, “Vermont saxman Brian McCarthy is the consummate working musician, and we do mean working. McCarthy’s resume reads like a no-job-too-small general contractor of jazz: studio sideman, Burlington nightclub regular, educator at Vermont colleges and high schools, sheet music archivist and a bandleader in his own right, having recently released his second CD: This Just In. Recorded at Lane Gibson studios in Charlotte, the album is a … classic Blue-Note style jazz record that includes fellow Vermonter Ray Vega on trumpet, Justin Kauflin on piano, Evan Gregor on bass and Quinn Blandford on drums…”
