SUMMARY:Sending Sisterhood: Building Benevolent Beloved Communities through the United States Postal System
DESCRIPTION:Sending Sisterhood: Building Benevolent Beloved Communities through the United States Postal System \nTuesday\, January 21\n2:45 to 3:50 p.m.\nRoy Room\, Dion Family Student Center \nSending Sisterhood: Building Benevolent Beloved Communities through the United States Postal System with Pamela N. Walker\, PhD\, Assistant Professor of History\, University of Vermont   \nDr. Walker’s talk will discuss the new yet hidden in plain sight story of women’s social movement participation during the 1960s through the Mississippi Box Project. The project unfolded through the U.S. postal service\, an overlooked government service that was a contentious site in the battle for civil rights. The project allowed ordinary Black women in Mississippi and white women in New England to forge unique relationships and participate in the Civil Rights Movement through the exchange of food\, clothing\, medicine\, letters\, and movement information. By the end of the decade\, more than six thousand individuals traded goods and letters through the postal system across the Mason-Dixon. Creating their own imperfect beloved communities through the postal service – most without ever meeting in person – Black and white women worked together to literally and figuratively feed the Civil Rights Movement.

DESCRIPTION:A Conversation with International Students: Perspectives of Life on Campus and in an Uncertain World \nTuesday\, January 21\n11:10 to 11:50 a.m.\nRoy Room\, Dion Family Student Center \nA Conversation with International Students: Perspectives of Life on Campus and in an Uncertain World with International Students from Saint Michael’s College and Representatives from the Institute for Global Engagement  \nIn 1967 Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. gave what\, at the time\, was considered a controversial speech—Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break the Silence—at the Riverside Church in New York City.  This speech was seen as a call not just for the United States to get out of Vietnam\, but for getting out of a “certain frame of mind\, of a way of thinking about ourselves and about the world.”  Please join SMC International Students from various countries and undergraduate and graduate levels as they discuss the intricacies of studying away from home\, sharing their perspectives and experiences of life on campus and in an uncertain world.

SUMMARY:Annual Saint Edmund Lecture Sponsored by the Edmundite Center for Faith and Culture
DESCRIPTION:Annual Saint Edmund Lecture \nSponsored by the Edmundite Center for Faith and Culture \nThursday\, November 14\, at 4:30 p.m.\nRoy Room\, Dion Student Center \nDr. Charles Briggs\, PhD\, a professor of medieval history in the Department of History at the University of Vermont\, will deliver the 2024 Annual Saint Edmund Lecture on Thursday\, November 14\, 2024\, at 4:30 p.m. in the Roy Event Center in the Dion Family Student Center (third floor). The title of the presentation is: “A Question of Counsel: Edmund of Abingdon’s Speculum religiosorum and Medieval ‘Mirror’ Literature.” \nAfter growing up in New York\, Dr. Briggs majored in history at Grinnell College in Iowa\, before going on to receive his M.Litt. from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1993). After a decade and a half of teaching and administration at Georgia Southern University\, where he was Professor of History\, Briggs returned to the more amenable climes and landscape of the Northeast. A specialist in the intellectual and cultural history of Europe in the thirteenth through early sixteenth centuries\, he teaches courses in late medieval and early modern European history\, global history\, historical methods\, and the history of the book. \nSaint Edmund of Abingdon is the patron of the Society of Saint Edmund\, the founding religious community of priests and brothers who established Saint Michael’s College. The Annual Saint Edmund Lecture honors Saint Edmund not only as the patron of the Edmundite but more specifically for his major work\, Speculum religiosorum (The Mirror of Religious)\, which is a significant writing by Saint Edmund of Abingdon\, who was Archbishop of Canterbury in the early 13th century. Written around 1213-1214\, this text serves as a spiritual guide for religious life\, combining catechetical material with contemplative practices. The work draws on the teachings of early Christian authorities like Augustine and Gregory\, as well as mystical writers such as Bernard of Clairvaux. It was originally composed in Latin and later translated into Anglo-Norman French and Middle English\, reflecting its widespread influence and appeal.
