Saint Michael’s College recently received a $1 million gift from an anonymous donor to launch a special current-use scholarship initiative designed to make tuition more affordable for students and their families.
This transformative gift directly supports the College’s expanded financial aid initiatives, which were recently introduced to increase access and affordability.
“This extraordinary act of generosity reflects the deep commitment of our community to ensuring that a Saint Michael’s education remains within reach,” said Richard Plumb, President of Saint Michael’s College. “At a time when families face increasing financial pressures, this gift empowers us to expand opportunity, strengthen our mission, and continue providing an exceptional, values-driven education to students who will go on to make meaningful contributions to the world.”
The initial $1 million contribution has already inspired an outpouring of additional support.
“This gift has already generated another $3 million in donations from former and current trustees, alumni, and friends of the College,” said Ellen Kane, Vice President for Advancement and Communications. “This is in addition to our general Saint Michael’s Fund annual appeal, which has been increasing over the last two years and also helps reduce the cost of tuition.”

Saint Michael’s recently introduced several major financial aid initiatives designed to address cost and expand access, including:
- Free tuition for Vermont households earning under $100,000.
- A tuition match with the University of Vermont for households earning more than $100,000.
- A new out-of-state flagship tuition rate.
- A new commuter tuition option for local students.
These initiatives, combined with the momentum generated by this latest philanthropic support, underscore the College’s commitment to affordability, accessibility, and student success.
