Fr. Mike Cronogue Award for Service

Only the second time we’ve given out this award, it is my great pleasure to award the Fr. Mike Cronogue Award for Service to Jim Wall from the Class of 1974.

As an undergraduate, Jim was a sociology major and a business minor. He was a member of Fire and Rescue, Crown and Sword, and a Resident Assistant. After leaving Saint Michael’s, Jim went on to earn his master’s in higher education from Michigan State University.

Jim is well-known to many in the Saint Michael’s Community having served two terms on the Board of Trustees, including four years as Chair. He received an honorary degree from Saint Michael’s in 2007 when he was the Commencement speaker.

He is an active member of his community in East Otis, MA as a member of the town’s Community Emergency Response Team, an all-volunteer run program. The team volunteers their time at a number of the town’s public events throughout the year. He recently stepped down as Vice Chair of the American Management Association, a nonprofit that promotes professional development opportunities through education resources. Active in the Church, Jim is on the board of the Sisters of Providence Ministry Corp. the holding company of the Providence Ministries for the Needy, Inc. of which he also served as chair.

Aside from being a College Trustee, Jim has volunteered for Admissions and Reunion and is a Mont St. Michel Society member.

A long-time HR executive, Jim retired in 2012 as global managing director of talent and chief diversity officer for Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Ltd, U.S. For his efforts in making Deloitte an employer of choice he was named HR Executive of the Year in 2002 by Human Resources Magazine.

Jim is married to Susan, sister of long-time SMC employee Dave Landers, and has two children: Maggie and Michael.

Academic Hall of Fame

In particular, it recognizes those graduates who have accomplished scholarship and creative activity of discovery, integration, application or service that emulates the academic, cultural, and civic goals of the College. The inaugural Alumni Academic Hall of Fame award was made during the 2002 Commencement Ceremonies.

Colonel Donald Cook Award

This award recognizes alumni who unselfishly give of themselves in service to others. The Colonel Donald G. Cook ’56 Award was instituted by former Alumni Association President James. J. Gallagher ’51 and is considered the College’s highest honor for alumni.

This award is inspired by the example of Colonel Donald G. Cook ’56 who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor during the Vietnam War. As a POW, he “repeatedly assumed more than his share of manual labor in order that the other POWs could improve the state of their health. Colonel Cook willingly and unselfishly put the interest of his comrades before his own well-being and, eventually, his life.” A copy of Colonel Cook’s Medal of Honor was presented to Saint Michael’s College on October 22, 2004 and is displayed in the Pomerleau Alumni Center.

This award is typically bestowed upon recipients during Reunion Weekend and most often when the recipient is celebrating a landmark reunion year. There are no limitations on how soon after graduation an alumnus/a can receive the award.

If you know of an alumnus or alumna who matches the criteria for this award please email alumni@smcvt.edu and tell us who and why he/she deserves consideration.

The Academic Hall of Fame celebrates Saint Michael’s College alumni whose post-graduate careers further the Mission of the College, “…to the enhancement of the human person and to the advancement of human culture in light of the Catholic faith.”

In particular, it recognizes those graduates who have accomplished scholarship and creative activity of discovery, integration, application or service that emulates the academic, cultural, and civic goals of the College. The inaugural Alumni Academic Hall of Fame award was made during the 2002 Commencement Ceremonies.

To date, the following Saint Michael’s alumni have been inducted into the Alumni Academic Hall of Fame:
