Diversity and Inclusion

A welcoming, supportive, and inclusive community

At the heart of our Edmundite Catholic mission is a belief that experiencing new perspectives, cultures, traditions and ideas helps us become fuller, more compassionate people. As a Catholic higher education institution with a social justice mission, we are called to be even more intentionally inclusive, celebrating the complexity and individuality that each person brings to our community. Each of us at Saint Michael’s carries an obligation to ensure all students, faculty and staff encounter a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environment.

Building a culture of inclusion is an ongoing and evolving journey. We are continually striving to ensure our processes, policies and behaviors support and encourage diversity, meeting the needs of all individuals, especially those from historically underrepresented and marginalized groups. Saint Michael’s College’s vision of inclusion and diversity embraces not only racial and ethnic identities, but also gender, age, religion, language, ability/disability, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, military service, geographic origin, and first-generation/multi-generation college experiences.

On Campus Groups

Our students are active in a number of organizations focused on the unique interests and issues of particular groups:

Common Ground is a GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance) that seeks to provide a safe space on the Saint Michael’s campus for all members of the LGBTQ+ community. We work with both students and staff members to promote education, awareness, and student advocacy. Common Ground also sponsors various events on campus such as speakers, performance artists, and movie nights in addition to working with off-campus organizations.

The Diversity Coalition’s primary goal is to encourage open dialogue, educational opportunity and the chance to celebrate diversity in all human culture and experience. The Diversity Coalition serves to educate and promote awareness of issues such as gender, race, religion and ethnicity.

The MLK Society is an interracial group dedicated to promoting the principles of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by hosting and sponsoring programs, lectures and workshops, including the annual Martin Luther King Convocation.

Diversity and Inclusion Communities

The school has two centers dedicated to issues of diversity and inclusion: The Center for Student Diversity, Empowerment, and Community (DEC) and The Center for Women and Gender. Both provide support, education and awareness, special events and a welcoming space for students, faculty, and staff.

MLK Convocation

Saint Michael's College celebrated its 28th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation, an event dedicated to educating the community based on Dr. King's ideals, from January 20th through January 24th, 2020.

The Center for Student Diversity, Empowerment, and Community (DEC)

The Center for Student Diversity, Empowerment, and Community (DEC) reflects our commitment to a campus and a world that values every human being, and supports and celebrates each person's uniqueness, experiences and contributions.

Center for Women and Gender

The mission of the Center for Women and Gender at Saint Michael's College is to promote awareness and activism around women's and gender equity issues by educating students, faculty and staff. We also support individuals by providing them with resources and referrals.
