Dr. James J. Shanley, D.M.D, Castine, ME, died September 5, 2024.

He was a graduate of Chaminade High School in Mineola, NY, before coming to Saint Michael’s to earn his biology master’s degree, and he completed later degrees at St. John’s University in New York, NY (master’s in microbiology), and Seton Hall Dental School in Jersey City, NJ.

Jim joined the Navy in 1965 and served in the Navy Dental Corps for 30 years at duty stations around the globe (including at the Naval Dental Clinic at Parris Island, SC), retiring as a captain. He specialized in maxillofacial prosthodontics.

Upon retirement from the Navy, Jim enjoyed a secondary professional career, working 16 years with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education where he evaluated medical residency and fellowship programs across the United States.

Jim was passionate about volunteering for and supporting the Castine community where he lived in Maine. He was a President’s Medallion level supporter of the College and a former Rotary member.

Jim is survived by his wife of 59 years, Janet (Shanley), two daughters and extended family.
