Elizabeth M. McCaffrey ’78

ELIZABETH M. MCCAFFREY, Springfield, MA, died March 5, 2023. Born in Springfield, MA, Liz fought her way into the world, and her parents fought doctors’ suggestions to marginalize her, instead building an inclusive environment in which she would grow and thrive. Establishing a swimming program very early in Liz’s life, her mother and siblings were all a part of the process of building and strengthening not only her physical, social, and negotiating abilities, but also those of dozens of other children who faced similar issues who were welcomed into the program. Through her school years, Liz always mainstreamed (a concept not yet imagined at the time), creating a brilliant learning opportunity for Liz, her educators, and other classmates, plus their parents as well. She thrived through her school years, as she was a curious and eager learner. Liz graduated from Saint Michael’s College with a bachelor’s degree. She was a lifelong correspondent with her extended family and loyal friends, an avid movie lover, and a voracious reader. She cherished her many pets. Liz was predeceased by her parents and two brothers. She is survived by seven sisters, extended family, and many friends.
