Howard T. Lyon M’93
Howard T. Lyon, Tucson, AZ, died July 30, 2023. Howard was born in Florence, AZ and resided in Picacho, Prescott and Phoenix. He graduated from Rose Lane elementary, Central High School, Prescott College with a major in Spanish and later from Saint Michael’s with a master’s degree in International Management.
He began his work life with the U.S. Forest Service as a firefighter and land manager. He volunteered for the Peace Corps in November of 1976, and he rose in an illustrious career which included being the Country Director in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Bolivia and Paraguay. He also served the agency in Costa Rica, Honduras, Botswana and Swaziland.
He also worked for the Agency for Rural Development in Vermont and the World Wildlife Fund in Washington, DC. He was one of the longest active Peace Corps members, serving 33 years for the organization and retiring as the Country Director in Paraguay in August 2022. He was dedicated to the Peace Corp mission of promoting peace, stability and intercultural understanding around the globe.
Howard mentored many young volunteers who will always recall his experience, wisdom, common sense and practical sense of humor. He returned to his beloved Tucson seeking a quiet retirement. He is remembered for his work and his love for family, friends and colleagues as well as for the physical beauty and cultural landscape of the borderlands, “La Frontera.”
He is survived by two brothers and is the Godfather for many young people in Mexico, Guatemala and Nicaragua, leaving an immeasurable impact on the lives of others in the developing world.
