James William King ’50

Died: April 29, 2024
Class of 1950

James William King, San Antonio, TX, died April 29, 2024.
Bill grew up in Springfield, MA, and graduated from Cathedral High School there. He attended Saint Michael’s for a year before serving in the Army during the Allied Occupation of Japan. Returning home, he resumed his English studies at the College, and later obtained his MBA from Northeastern University in Boston.
He followed his father’s footsteps into sales, which led to a corporate sales training career paired with 40 years of teaching the Dale Carnegie courses.
He met Kathleen Scanlon in 1951 and they were married in 1954. From an attic apartment in Winchester, MA to Cheshire, CT, their family eventually added five children. A move to Charlottesville, VA, furthered his career as director of sales training and Dale Carnegie instructor.
In “retirement,” Bill and Kathleen moved to Duck, NC, where Bill obtained his real estate license and went back to work. Fully retired in 2000, they moved to Venice, FL, and then on to San Antonio in 2015 to be near two daughters there.
A thread of faith, family and humor weaved its way through Bill’s life. He was devoted to his Catholic faith, his wife and children, service to others in many capacities, his one-liners and puns, and kindness to all in his path.
A son predeceased him. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Kathleen, two sons, three daughters and extended family.
