John R. Sullivan ’53
John R. Sullivan, Sherman Oaks, CA, died October 23, 2024.
Born in Glens Falls, NY, John earned his Saint Michael’s degree in sociology before serving honorably in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1961, an experience that shaped his character and commitment to service.
From 1953 to 1963 he was a claim examiner for the Graphic Arts Mutual Insurance. John then devoted 35 years of his career to Mobil Oil, starting as an adjuster and investigator. His dedication to his work and the people he served continued with five additional years as the Commissioner for Workers’ Compensation in the State of California. In every role he undertook, John brought warmth, wisdom, and a steadfast work ethic that earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and community alike.
A man of strong faith, John’s devotion to his spiritual beliefs guided him throughout his life and inspired those around him. He was also known for his love of trivia and was an enthusiastic member of a highly successful trivia team. John enjoyed the camaraderie, intellectual challenge, and lively conversations that came with each competition, making him a favorite among teammates and friends.
He was a Fellows Club supporter of the College.
A son predeceased him, as did his late wife, Gertrude Sullivan. He is survived by a sister and extended family.
