KATHERINE HARTNETT, Burlington, VT, died July 14/15 in a tragic drowning in the Huntington River. Katie worked with kindergarteners in the Burlington School District and her father, a former Burlington city councilor, is well-known in the city’s New North End neighborhood where he manages a convenience store. After majoring in elementary education at Saint Michael’s, she went on to earn her teaching master’s at the college. Hardworking and conscientious, Katie held numerous jobs to support her post-secondary education. At the time of her death, she was employed as a paraeducator in the kindergarten classroom at Champlain Elementary School.  She was notably empathetic, big-hearted and attuned to Burlington’s homeless population, and she passionately advocated on behalf of the homeless to Burlington City Council. She was a social media advisor for several of her father’s Council campaigns and loved annual trips to Maine with her parents to enjoy the ocean and lobster. Sports were a big part of Katie’s life. She played high school field hockey, basketball, and golf, with a particular talent for shooting three-point shots in basketball, and she earned many awards and scholarships upon high school graduation. Katie is survived by her parents, David and Lisa Hartnett,  and extended family, including her grandfather Robert deLaricheliere ’66, her grandmother Aline deLaricheliere, a retired longtime staff member in  Institutional Advancement at Saint Michael’s; an uncle, Alex deLaricheliere ’94 and his wife (Katie’s aunt) Elizabeth deLaricheliere ’95, and another aunt, Aimee deLaricheliere ’99, formerly of the College library staff.
