McCarthy Art Gallery Exhibition
Stop by the McCarthy Art Center and view: "Maize Meditation" by Amanda Turner Pohan. Guest Curated by Overnight Projects.

For the month of September, artist Amanda Turner Pohan will transform the McCarthy Art Gallery at St. Michael’s College into a library of archival materials documenting a timeline of corn cultivation, from the practices of the Abenaki Nation of Vermont to the rise of American agricultural biotech corporations. To mark the final year of harvest of the 66-acre cornfield leased from St. Michael's by a local farmer, this project invites participants to attend an event in the gallery on the weekend of the fall equinox. This event will draw connections between traditional agricultural practices and the techniques that produce the genetically modified corn consumed today.

Vermont Sings for Peace XI

The Chapel of Saint Michael the Archangel
Now in its 11th year, this annual festival concert brings five Vermont choruses together for a celebration of global peace and to raise money for a local charity focused on Peace and Justice. The concert is produced by Counterpoint, Vermont’s Professional Vocal Ensemble. This year, in addition to Counterpoint, the participating choruses will be The Harwood Union High School Honors Choir, The Mad River Chorale, The Slate Valley Singers, and The Vermont Chamber Artists. In addition to singing on their own, the five choruses will sing some songs together, and the audience will be invited to sing along on classic peace songs. Admission to the concert is free, but there will be presentation by Kids4Peace, a summer program in New England that brings together teenagers from the U.S., Israel, and the Palestinian Territories, and donations for Kids4Peace will be collected.

Quebecois Choral Concert

McCarthy Recital Hall

Le Chœur En Supplément’Air is a four voices choir composed of 300 to 350 adult choristers. The choral originates from Quebec City but it’s members come from every region of the province. Mrs. Carole Bellavance is its musical and artistic director. The prime objective of the choir is to sing beautiful songs in a friendly atmosphere where the pure pleasure of singing comes first. We relish the opportunity to also share this passion in front of audiences in a musical and artistic collective of the highest quality.

In September 2018, fifty of the choir’s singers will be touring New England and performing in Vermont at Saint Michael’s College on Sunday, September 23 (7-9 pm, McCarthy Arts Center Recital Hall). The theme of this fall tour will be “Il était une fois…: Le cinéma à travers ses plus belles chansons” [Once Upon a Time: The Cinema Through Its Most Beautiful Songs].

The performance at Saint Michael’s College is co-sponsored by the college’s Department of Classical and Modern Languages & Literatures and the Alliance Française of the Lake Champlain Region (AFLCR). The concert will be dedicated to the memory of Linda Pervier, who served twice as president of the AFLCR and was decorated by the French Ministry of Education with les Palmes académiques in recognition of her work on behalf of the French language. Linda initiated the collaboration between Saint Michael’s and the AFLCR on this concert, as she had for other events, before passing away in July 2018.
