Saint Mike’s technologists share wisdom regionally

Saint Michael’s Information Technology staff and one business faculty leader over the recent spring break were presenters at a regional conference in Rhode Island for computing professionals, emphasizing how technology as applied at Saint Michael’s can enhance collaboration among faculty, staff and student workers.

The NorthEast Regional Computing Program (NERCOMP) annual conference was in Providence, RI, March 21-23.  IT attendees from the College were Bill Anderson, CIO; MaryJane Russell, director of business intelligence; Joanne Trottier, director of IT Operations; Kellie Campbell, Accelerated Summer College director and IT assistant director; and Jerome Allen, instructional technologist.  Joining them was Karen Popovich, chair and associate professor of business administration/accounting.

Key conference themes were: “IT Services: Support Models and Practices; Leadership and Organizational Development; and Teaching and Learning.”

Campbell and Popovich co-presented a session:  “An innovative instruction model: Accelerated Summer College at Saint Michael’s College.” They discussed the model, strategic directions and opportunities, faculty development through course-design models and collaborative teaching experiences, along with student perspectives on how ASC supports personalized learning paths.

Allen participated in the poster session, presenting his experience of training and development of IT student employees: In his presentation, “Student Support and Leadership: Improving people, making connections and building community,” he emphasized “the potential for building student leaders using the building blocks of trust, visioning, skills practice and providing resources to create a culture that balances human development and academic achievement on college campuses,” Allen said.
