Breakfast celebrates College’s community partnerships

May 13, 2016

Several members of the Saint Michael’s community and partners from the wider community were honored during the Community Partner Appreciation and Awards Breakfast celebrated on May 5, 2016 in the Roy Room of Dion Family Student Center

The event is designed to celebrate the many nonprofit partnerships who offer Saint Michael’s students volunteer, civic engagement, and internship opportunities.  More than 65 community members, faculty, administrators, and students attended.

Rachel Sanborn ’16 gave the welcome address.  During her time at Saint Michael’s as a sociology major, she has participated in several community-engaged learning courses, a multi-semester internship at the United Way of Northwest Vermont, and served on the Extended Service committee through MOVE.  She spoke about how all three activities have profoundly influenced her learning both inside and outside of the classroom, teaching her professional skills, data analysis, and the value of collaboration within the community to solve problems.

Five individuals received Community Engagement Awards, designed to recognize those who are committed to nurturing partnerships between the community and Saint Michael’s College. “Our partnerships are in service to the common good, uphold our commitment to social justice, and inspire active citizenship,” said Joan Wagner, director, Center for Community-Engaged Learning and coordinator, Experiential Learning. “They enable students, staff, and faculty alike to learn from and build valuable relationships with the community. These awards acknowledge that campus-community partnerships are collaborative and that it takes many individuals in varying roles to strengthen communities and bring about change.”
