smclogoVermont high school students have the opportunity to partake in the Saint Michael’s College learning experience through dual enrollment, a program for students to earn postsecondary credit while in high school, free of charge.

The dual enrollment program allows Vermont junior and senior high school students to take a college course in conjunction with their high school curriculum. Students must be enrolled at a public high school or technical school. This opportunity is also extended to homeschooled students.

Dual enrollment is conducted in three different tiers:

Tier One: High school students arrive on campus for in-person classes or partake in online learning. Students in this tier receive two course vouchers, and can take no more than two classes per year. Only one class can be taken per semester, and vouchers can be used between the Fall, Spring, and Summer sessions.

Tier Two: Through a partnership between Saint Michael’s College and participating high schools, high school educators teach courses and follow the College’s academic standards and approved syllabus.

Tier Three: Courses at participating high schools are taught directly by Saint Michael’s College faculty.

Through this program students are eligible to take 83 different courses in such subjects as art, accounting, media studies, anthropology, English, science, and business. They can earn college credit for these courses, whether or not a student chooses to enroll at Saint Michael’s College.

“It’s a great way for students to get ahead of college requirements, and a good opportunity to test out what college is like and get a feel for what it’s all about,” said Alex Colletta ’18, Saint Michael’s assistant director of operations (online and non-traditional programs).

The flexible pathways in dual enrollment allow Vermont high school students to be flexible in their learning. To learn more about dual enrollment at Saint Michael’s College, visit https://www.smcvt.edu/academics/registrar-and-catalog/dual-enrollment/.
