Over the past five years in Vermont, requests for emergency services has increased by 22%. Recent environmental disasters in Vermont and across the U.S. underscore the need for a well-trained, adaptable emergency workforce even as workforce shortages have become critical. Increasingly, professional advancement in these fields require a bachelor’s degree.
Saint Michael’s College is uniquely positioned to meet this need through a program that blends academic depth, hands-on experience, and community engagement.
The Bachelor of Science in Emergency Services offers a curriculum that is grounded in the liberal arts with a foundation in disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation.
In addition to the focused tracks, the major requires the addition of a minor (or double major)to allow for a deeper dive into a discipline related to caring for humans, our culture, and the environment.
Students completing the Bachelor of Science in Emergency Services will learn professional skills and knowledge for public service as well as the value of appreciating the lived experience ofthe people they help.

Students volunteering with St. Michael’s Fire & Rescue have the opportunity to respond as firefighters and EMTs to emergencies across campus and local communities.
Saint Michael’s College Fire & Rescue was organized in 1969 by students responding to the need for emergency care on campus and the surrounding area. With a commitment to serving others, Fire & Rescue responds to more than 3,500 calls year round – making SMFR the busiest volunteer ambulance service in the State of Vermont.
The Emergency Services program represents an academic acknowledgement of the work that these students do in the spirit of service to others and for the good of our community.

The Adventure Sports program also offers a Wilderness First Responder course. The program trains students to lead outdoor adventure trips and to be well-equipped in case of a backcountry emergency. These skills and certification can enhance an Emergency Services degree or provide additional preparation for a career in wilderness medicine emergency management.
Students can earn earn nationally recognized certifications through embedded curriculum. These certifications ensure students are job-ready upon graduation.
EMT/Paramedic, Firefighter, Disaster Management Specialist, Physical Therapist, Forest Ranger, Nurse, Wildland Firefighter, Search and Rescue Technician, Police Officer, Occupational Therapist, Doctor, Dentist, etc.
