Michael J. Ruggiero ’61
Michael J. Ruggiero, Center Moriches, NY, died December 22, 2021, the College learned recently.
After earning his Saint Michael’s bachelor’s degree in English, Mike went on to receive a master’s in education (guidance and counseling) from C.W. Post/Long Island University in Greenvale, NY, in 1975.
Mike, a Korean War veteran, was awarded two medals from New York State – the Medal of Merit and the Conspicuous Star, for serving in direct support of combat operations and for conspicuous service with a decorated military unit as a sergeant with the U.S. Army in Korea (1953-54). A lifelong devoted supporter of U.S. military troops, he served as a Selective Service Board member for 10 years.
In 1999, Mike was honored for 25 years’ service as an English teacher at East Islip High School (Long Island, NY), and his name is prominently displayed in the high school lobby with his other honorees. In 1976, he also had an original poem that he wrote in haiku form, The Camera, published by National Poetry Press.
He was a President’s Medallion supporter of the College, including with a leadership gift to the Kresge Foundation Challenge and the Saint Michael’s Campaign.
His wife, June, died in 2017. Survivors include his niece, Allison “Allie” Menday ’96.
