Richard J. Barone, Sr., 91, of Meriden passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 7th, 2026, at Yale-New Haven Hospital with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband of 68 years to Harriet Ciaburro Barone. Richard was born in New Haven on January 22, 1935, and was the son of the late John and Mary Testa Barone. A graduate of Notre Dame High School, West Haven, he later earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Michael’s College in Winooski, Vermont and received the “Alumni of the Year Award” from them in 1976. Richard worked for Jetlines of New Haven and later for Buckeye Pipe Line Company, Auburn, New York, retiring as a supervisor. A real sports enthusiast, he coached football in Hamden, Meriden and North Branford, coached baseball in Hamden, enjoyed watching the UConn Girls basketball along with his wife and vacationing and boating on Lake Bomoseen, Vermont. He was a volunteer firefighter at the Hamden Westwood’s Fire Department. Most of all, Richard enjoyed being with his large family and watching his children and grandchildren extracurricular activities, loved them all unconditionally and would always remind them to “Be Good”. Father of Anne D’Agostino (David), Elizabeth Ranchinsky, Richard J. Barone, Jr. (Sharmaine), Marlene Cohen (Eric), Donna Barone (Steve Young), David Barone (Laura), Michael Barone (Hillary). Grandfather of Sarah Mach (Dan), Amanda Bednarcyzk, CJ Ranchinsky (Megan), Stephen Ranchinsky, Richard Barone III, Nate Barone, Michael Cohen (Kerey), Gregory Cohen (Priscila), Amy Ray (Justin), Jeannette Iannacone (Tom), Jack Viens, Jack Foley, Max Foley, Noah Barone, Ely Barone, Micaila Nicklas (Joey), Brandon Barone (Kendra), William Barone, and Maddie Barone. Step Grandfather of Erica D’Agostino (Anthony) and David D’Agostino (Tina). Great-Grandfather of Bella, Derick, Parker and Holden Bednarcyzk, Daniel and Lena Mach, Brody and Ryder Ranchinsky, Emma and Kylee Cohen, Callum Iannacone and Isla Nicklas. Step Great-Grandfather of Gia Scagliarini, Mila and Domenic D’Agostino. Predeceased by his brothers John A. Barone and Nicholas J. Barone.
