Salvatore D. Salerni

It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of their beloved father, Salvatore D. Salerni on October 13, 2015.

Born in Rutland on December 1, 1927, he was the eldest son of Anthony and Rose Salerni. He was a graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy and Saint Michael’s College. After serving his country during the Korean conflict he operated the South End Food Market with his brother, Ted, until its closing in 1997. Throughout this time, he was an active member of the Vermont Retail Grocer’s Association and served a term as its president. Throughout his work life he was active in a number of local charitable organizations and long into his retirement, he could be seen serving Sunday dinners to the patrons at the Open Door Mission. Not being one to let age slow him down, he studied aviation and obtained his pilot’s license at the age of 70. He finished his first book, “The Gift of Sidone,” at the age of 82 and continued to work on its sequel up until his death.

He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Marie, in 2013, and his sister, Mary. He is survived by his three children Cathy, Tony and Teddy; and his devoted brother Ted and sister Kathleen along with six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. His contagious smile and even guidance will be sorely missed.
